Laser print on archival photo paper
This piece entitled Love Struck is part of a series called I (Heart) Art.
The heart symbol is an ideograph that dates back to 5th century B.C., was inspired by the shape of the fruit of the Silphium plant, and somehow became a representative symbol for love. I have always found it strange that the heart is the part of the human body that gets credit for feeling strong emotions, like love, because love is actually a result of a chemical reaction in the brain.
This series explores the feelings and emotions that are associated with the heart, such as love, heartbreak, pain, sadness, longing and lust. These emotions are not tangible, and they have no physical form to reference; they are simply feelings, and so I have taken artistic liberties to imagine what certain emotions would look like if they could be represented visually.
This mixed media series celebrates the contrast between the hard lines of the illustration and the fluid forms of the paint, but also the misconception and misrepresentation that exists in our understanding of emotions coming from the heart - an organ that simply pumps blood throughout our body to keep us alive.
