G L Barrett is a British-Canadian artist and writer. Hailing originally from the Isle of Wight, they have lived in London, Washington DC and Toronto, but now reside in a quiet corner of Prince Edward County. They enjoy macro photography, wordplay and gardening, with a particular fondness for native plants.

In 2022, they were shortlisted for the Penguin Randomhouse Student Award for Fiction, and a year later their first short fiction was published in the Can’t Compute anthology. G L Barrett’s extensive expertise in graphic design is reflected in their visuals that are simple yet striking, creative yet deep; every detail is carefully considered and meaningful.

In Spring of 2024, three pieces from their Propagate series of poetic artworks were juried into the ‘Renewal’ group show at Melt Studio & Gallery in Picton, Prince Edward County. Their debut was well-received, and their poetic artworks continue to be exhibited there.

THE STORY:

Layering is the third installment in the Propagate series of poetic digital artworks from emerging artist, G L Barrett. In this piece, erasure poetry is employed to explore colonial expansion through the setting down of new roots while connected to an established system.

The innovative Propagate series brings together typography, poetry and minimalist abstract style to tell the stories of plants experiencing propagation, while simultaneously highlighting the parallels with human migration. Oversized typographic elements create a striking visual representation of each propagation technique, an effect that is further emphasised by the stark palette.
