Jessica Mitchell is a Canadian portrait artist based in Hamilton, Ontario. She has over 15 years of experience working in portrait realism with mediums including acrylic paint, graphite, and ink. Jessica’s main artistic themes relate to identity, community, and how an individual's social self can vary from their internal sense of self. Her educational background in psychology has guided her understanding of the ways in which people mould themselves to fit into a larger community. Her portrait work has been shown in Toronto and Hamilton, Ontario.
THE STORY:
Jessica’s Line of Thought series portraits are each created by drawing a single line that never intersects with itself. These portraits are an exploration in mindfulness and an intentional act of deceleration by focusing one’s attention – both the artist’s while drawing and the audience’s while viewing.
Up close, these portraits represent the subject as an ongoing stream of consciousness and stories we tell to understand the world around us. When seen from a distance, each image can be interpreted as one unified depiction of the subject. This series intends to investigate how our thoughts create the person we become over time and how a change in perspective can bring a new understanding.
