William Maclean is a self-taught artist exploring analog film photography and printmaking. He grew up in the Hamilton/Niagara area and lived in the North end of Hamilton until 2021 when he moved to London Ontario. Here he was recently selected for the London Arts Council “traffic signal wrap” project and had three works in the 2024 juried Pride Art Show. Behind the scenes he has been trying to make a name for himself in the DIY/zine ecosystem. His latest zines include a collection of Polaroid emulsion lifts from Woodland Cemetery and his first volume of multiple exposure work on 35mm.
THE STORY:
I use early photographic techniques and equipment to create otherwise impossible perspectives in an attempt to show others my way of experiencing the world. Driven to question and reimagine what a photo can be, my work engages the continuums of past and present; continuity and fragmentation; grief and contentment. Currently, my focus is primarily on large format photography and cyanotype printing. This image is one of two that tells the story of everything that has happened to us collectively from February to August of 2024.
