A lifetime of making photographs has taken David Hill through many roles from passionate amateur to a camera for hire, in the past creating images under the red safelight to currently manipulating digital data to paper.
David has been surrounded by photography since his birth in Hamilton. With the guidance of his mother, who worked in the photo business in Hamilton as a young woman, the seeds were planted.

His professional photo career took him on an interesting meander through the world of portraits, products, places and ultimately personal artwork. The personal work has always been about the moments, the stories. It is this communication that is at the heart of his artistic efforts. His perpetual challenge has been to harness the elusive and gratifying combination of light, movement and meaning.

Returning to live in Hamilton a few years ago the recent artistic output has been more in the vein of assemblage and sculpture. Working with old, discarded materials these works set up a challenge for the viewer to create and participate in the new stories.
Since approximately 1988 Hill has been exhibiting in various group and solo shows.

These exhibitions include photos and assemblages from Contact Photography Festival to Orillia Museum of Art and History, most often with his wife Christine Mack.

THE STORY:

Photography is a way of life. Life is a series of events that recount interactions, impressions and ultimately tell stories about our place in this world.

These images are from a series of daily observations in the world around me. I refer to them as “Today’s Observations”.
They are a part of the social media that our world has adopted as a necessity in our lives. I participate.

For me this communication is about telling stories in the form of photographs so that others can experience some of my joy and wonder of the world around me. Simple activity and unexpected occurrences all qualify as a part of these narratives. Ironic, ordinary and unexpected things can happen at any time. The real fun is when the viewer responds with their own memories and experiences triggered by the images. A picture is worth a thousand words.
So let us enjoy the fleeting moments that surround us on a daily basis.
