Afternoon coffee tastes different before the show;
It’s not yet bitter, it’s full of promise.

The afternoon shadows stretch across the walls.
The cello slumps in the corner,
The high hat is ready, in silent pause.

Before her lips are red and chapped from the brass,
She knows all the best songs will remind her of him.
She hates how all the worst songs remind her of him.

Before the show, everything is full of promise.

*This work was created for the A Side/B Side collaborative group show at Smokestack Studios - a two-part show in which each artist was provided with a silk screened vinyl form and given the prompt "Smooth Jazz" for the A Side show, and "Hard Rock" for the B Side show.  This work was made in tandem with the Capacity collection.

The Capacity collection is an exploration of the unique human ability to simultaneously let go, hold on, release, pivot and surrender all while experiencing both the mundane and important aspects of everyday life.

Capacity reflects on our human tendency to compartmentalize our experiences and emotions to maintain separation between different aspects of our lives with others, despite knowing that in a deeper, cosmic sense, we’re all interconnected—both with each other and with the past and future versions of ourselves.

The artist is fascinated by the stories others have shared about their capacity to endure, to accept, to grieve; to hold space for others and oneself at the same time, all through symbolic visual language that communicates shadow, light, containment, spilling over, autonomy and free will.

"She used to be afraid of the dark until she realized shadows are proof that there’s light."
