This painting was inspired by the way we try to protect ourselves from the pain that comes from being open and vulnerable with others or even with ourselves.

Being vulnerable is scary! It can hurt. Actually, it usually does hurt, because honesty and openness takes courage and doesn't always land well with others.  If you feel sick to your stomach at the thought of sharing your true thoughts and emotions with others, you know what I'm talking about. That vulnerability hangover, that feeling of having over-shared, the fear of rejection. That's some heavy stuff. No one likes to get hurt, so it's easier to just clam up and keep your true feelings to yourself...until something changes. That one moment in time when you decide enough is enough, and that you're going to take a risk and break down the walls you've built around yourself, no matter what the outcome.

And when that moment has been reached, everything gets easier. JUST KIDDING. Deciding to be your true self can be freeing, but it's also terrifying and sometimes there's even a breakdown involved, which can really hurt. Bad. But rebuilding can only happen after the breakdown, that's when the healing can truly begin, when you are ready to start breaking down the walls you never needed to build in the first place.
