In the summer months, rain can be a nuisance. It keeps us inside when we would rather be outside. We change plans, feeling slighted by Mother Nature. But what if we saw the rain as just another weather system? One day it’s sunny, and the next day it’s raining. That neither is good or bad, but just different. Or better yet, what if we could see the rain as something to celebrate? The life-giving gift of water! A chance for the plants to grow, for the land to cool off, for the animals to rest, for us to rest, too. The rain can be a great excuse to just stay in, get cozy, slow down with a good book or sit with your thoughts, without the pressure to “make the most of the day”.
There’s something comforting about being safe at home, watching the rain. The physical experience of it is beautiful - the sounds, the smell of petrichor, the desaturated colours of the landscape thanks to an absence of sun. But the feeling that comes with the rain is special, too. It washes away the dust and debris outside, and perhaps the opportunity it provides for us to stay home and take time to slow down feels like the same process. A mental cleansing of sorts, a chance to clean away the old thoughts and make room for new ones.
