In order to release emotions, we must be able to fully experience them. This painting was inspired by the way children experience emotions - they move through different feelings very quickly, and the emotions are always intense! From one second to the next, a young mind can experience intense disappointment and rage (which comes out in the form of a temper tantrum) but usually, when the child is allowed to fully express the anger through a tantrum, the feelings seem to lessen, to dissipate, and are then replaces by new feelings, maybe even joy immediately after a tantrum.

There is a beauty and a magic to the way that children express emotions, because they actually don't know how to repress them. They simply allow the feelings to flow, and they are not concerned with how the feelings present to others. Anger comes out as anger. Joy comes out as joy. Children feel everything so deeply, but also don't hold onto the happiness or the pain for very long. If a new feeling comes on, they welcome it, experience it, and then release it, ready for whatever comes next.

This painting is a reminder to feel the feelings as they come. A reminder that feeling all the pain and joy is a way to honour our emotions and experiences, and also a beautiful way to make space for whatever can come next.
