Mixed media on canvas 2024
@tarunasinghart
Taruna is a Canadian mixed media artist whose work is deeply inspired by her South Asian heritage and global experiences. Her practice centres on sustainability, reusing and recycling materials that are often discarded. The depth and dimension in her work are achieved through materials that many would consider trash, demonstrating that even the forsaken can be given a new, beautiful, and purposeful life.
By harmonizing paint, paper, pencil, photography, typography, and foliage, Taruna creates textured paintings that explore themes of identity and belonging amidst life's transience. With a background in Art and Advertising Design from NYC Technical College, she spent years in graphic design before the pandemic reignited her passion for fine art. Her paintings serve as daily meditations, delving into the essence of belonging in a changing world.
Taruna's work is featured in public and private collections in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. Her largest painting, 'Chakras,' was recently acquired by St. Michael’s Hospital Patient and Family Learning Centre in Toronto. This vibrant abstract painting now brightens their ‘Joy’ collection by BIPOC artists, fostering positivity and hope.
THE STORY:
My art, fueled by the essence of freedom, is a heartfelt response to the #WomanLifeFreedom movement. Through the lens of 'Tamannah' symbolizing the fervent desire for an independent identity, this acrylic mixed media work delves deep into realms of belonging. Within this piece, I explore the journey of the feminine spirit, often obscured by societal veils of expectation. Yet, within this tapestry of constraints, emerges a resilient narrative of strength and courage — the relentless pursuit of visibility despite adversity. It's about embracing the inherent freedom and longing to simply be.
